Job Description

The Director of APCs is responsible for the management of all Advanced Practice Clinicians (APCs) for TeamHealth service lines within the Memorial Hermann system and Huntsville Memorial Hospital. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the management of personnel; budget/productivity management; patient/company satisfaction; new program development, negotiation of coverage and changes with healthcare clients, policy and regulatory compliance; service and commitment to quality health care.



  • Supervision and management of all nurse practitioners and physician assistants in Memorial Hermann system and Huntsville Memorial Hospital. This includes but is not limited to: recommendations regarding candidates and hiring, annual compliance training, performance evaluations, discipline, recommendations for termination, and establishing and enforcing policies and procedures related to APC clinical activities.
  • Works with the Senior VP of Integrated Services, Senior Vice President (SVP), System Medical Director (SMD), Chief Quality Officer (CQO), Vice President Operations (VPO) and Facility Medical Directors (FMD) to manage full-time APC staffing at all facilities.
  • Manages and resolves scheduling problems in conjunction with Lead APCs.  Assists with coverage in emergency situations which include possibly covering shifts themselves. 
  • Manages the Lead APC Program which includes leading monthly meetings.
  • Provides chart audits, in conjunction with Documentation Specialist on a monthly basis or as needed. 
  • Identify appropriate physician sponsors for all APCs in collaboration with TeamHealth credential coordinators and Facility Medical Director.
  • Oversees orientation for all APCs in conjunction with FMDs and Lead APCs.  Develops and maintains orientation manuals for APCs. 
  • Work clinically in areas where APCs are utilized and at sites where provider is privileged, when necessary to determine needs for optimal use of APCs.
  • Coordinate APC functions with corporate department to maximize clinic or contract facility support.
  • Serve as a liaison between corporate department heads, APCs, System and Facility Medical Directors and staff physicians.
  • Evaluate areas where APCs might be utilized, initiate Quality Assurance programs involving APCs where appropriate.
  • Provide to TeamHealth current information on APCs regarding government legislation, billing and practice issues.  Communicate as appropriate to APCs.  This includes the maintaining of Delegation Protocols, Delineation Privileges, and Scope of Practice criteria on at least an annual basis. 
  • Review by-laws for each facility on an annual basis or as changes are made and ensure compliance.
  • Maintains prescriptive authority requirements and remains current on prescriptive authority changes.
  • Attends the following meetings on a regular basis:  ER section meetings, hospital process meetings as appropriate by facility, hospital nurse staff meetings, Lead APC meetings, and other meetings as requested by Senior leadership of TeamHealth. 
  • Under the direction of Human Resources, establish and enforce policies and procedures for personnel activities.
  • Provide recommendations for marketing strategies for TeamHealth as needed.
  • Manage APC personnel through employee hiring, salary determination, employee evaluations, scheduling of personnel, employee discipline and termination in collaboration with TeamHealth Human Resources. 
  • Participate in conflict mediation and peer review for APCs upon request of client and or TeamHealth.
  • Work with recruiter to maintain current market analysis data for APC compensation in the Houston, Texas area.
  • Maintains ongoing communication through meetings, e-mails, or face-to-face meetings with APC providers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Senior VP of Integrated Services, SVP, SMD, CQO, and VPO.

Job Requirements


  • ENP or PA License with five years clinic background working in a fast-paced Emergency Department;
  • Minimum three years in medical management;
  • Excellent judgment and decision-making skills;
  • Excellent communications skills (verbal and written);
  • Good computer skills (word-processing and spreadsheet);
  • Excellent presentation and negotiation skills; and
  • Ability to meet stringent and multiple deadlines;
  • Some knowledge of CPT coding, diagnosis coding, insurance carriers, billing and collection procedures, and
  • Ability to handle stress and conflict.

This position may require manual dexterity and/or frequent use of the computer, telephone, 10-key, calculator, office machines (copier, scanner, fax) and/or the ability to perform repetitive motions and/or meet production standards to comply with the essential functions. Also, may require physical and/or mental stamina to work overtime, additional hours beyond a regular schedule and/or more than five days per week.
