Job Description


This position’s primary focus is capturing data related to the hospital discharge process and outpatient setting. Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) will be utilized to identify the location of the patient after discharge from the hospital and that information will be input into the patient tracking system. This position will also support the collection, maintenance, and distribution of information as it relates to specific program needs. The Data Specialist must acquire a thorough understanding of TeamHealth’s processes and demonstrate flexibility, a sense of urgency, ability to prioritize, and be detailed oriented.


  • Works to perform data entry in a timely, accurate manner.
  • Enters and/or updates patient demographics using information found in patients’ hospital records through the use of the hospital EMR.
  • Monitors error report, identifies probable causes, and makes necessary corrections when required.
  • Understands TeamHealth standard processes and demonstrates ability to perform data entry in a consistent manner.
  • Works with Program Manager on any training needs.
  • Understands and strives to meet accuracy and productivity goals.
  • Participates as requested in all departmental meetings and initiatives.
  • Assists with special projects as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Follows and maintains patient confidentiality appropriate with HIPAA compliance standards at all times.


Job Requirements


  • Job performed in a well-lit, modern office setting;
  • Occasional lifting / carrying (10 pounds or less);
  • Occasional standing / bending / stooping / reaching / pulling;
  • Moderate stress;
  • Prolonged sitting;
  • Prolonged work on a PC / Computer; and
  • Travel may be minimally required for inter-office meetings.

This position may require manual dexterity and/or frequent use of the computer, telephone, calculator, office machines (copier, scanner, and fax) and/or the ability to perform repetitive motions and/or meet production standards to comply with the essential functions. Also, may require physical and/or mental stamina to work overtime, additional hours beyond a regular schedule and/or occasionally more than five days per week.


  • One to three years of data entry experience.
  • Three to five years’ experience at using PC and database applications.
  • Working knowledge of DRGs, medical terminology, and EMR systems.
  • Experience with quality improvement, quality assurance, and/or case management beneficial.
  • Proficient computer skills (Outlook, Word and Excel)
  • Familiarity with modern office equipment, i.e. facsimile, copier, scanner, etc.
  • Ability to grasp and apply technical concepts.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (both oral and written).
  • Ability to self-motivate and work with minimal direction/supervision.
  • Thrives on meeting productivity and accuracy goals.
  • Excellent judgement, decision-making and problem solving skills.
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational and analytical skills accompanied by flexibility to quickly adapt to any new business environment.
  • Experience in handling simultaneous assignments by assessing project deadlines, establishing work priorities, and coordinating personal work schedule.
