JOB DESCRIPTION OVERVIEW:

The Coding Senior is responsible for monitoring the work flow and production in the PBC Coding Department. Coding Seniors also serve as the first contact for the coders with questions and performs level 1 quality audits.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Responsible for daily monitoring and reporting of the individual team’s chart inventory and production.
  2. In addition, each senior is responsible for overseeing specific functions in the coding department such as:
    1. Production
    2. Denials Management (DMS or ETM)
    3. Level 1 Audits
    4. Letters of Dispute
    5. Back end questions
    6. TES Edits
    7. Reviews and approves OnBase Beta charts
  •  Assists coding trainer with quality assurance auditing as needed.
  •  Reports daily productivity and all pertinent issues to the Supervisor.
  •  Informs the Supervisor and Manager of any issues that they identify
  •  Identifies issues, problems, errors, or changes preventing the Coding Department from functioning smoothly and communicates these issues to the Coding Supervisor or Manager to help resolve the issues at the Operational Level.
  • Coordinates projects under the direction of the Coding Supervisor or Manager.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Reports coding issues to the Supervisor when appropriate.
  2. Other duties as assigned by the Coding Supervisor of Manager.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE:

Skills

  • Proficiency in Diagnosis and CPT-4 procedural coding
  • Extensive knowledge of medical terminology, regulatory requirements, and physician billing and reimbursements.
  • Effective communication and written skills; ability to interact effectively with all level.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, OnBase, TES and GE Centricity preferred.            

Education           

High school diploma or equivalent    

AAPC or AHIMA certification required.        

Experience           

Three years previous medical coding experience in emergency medicine.

One year leadership experience a plus.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

High production volume, fast-paced office environment.

Overtime may be mandated as needed.

TRAVEL:

Coding training classes, and seminar attendance may require travel. 

PHYSICAL / ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:

This position may require manual dexterity and/or frequent use of the computer, telephone, 10-key, calculator, office machines (copier, scanner, fax) and/or the ability to perform repetitive motions and/or meet production standards to comply with the essential functions. Also, may require physical and/or mental stamina to work overtime, additional hours beyond a regular schedule and/or more than five days per week.
