Coding Director

Overview

The Director of Coding will provide overall leadership of day-to-day operational support for all coding areas. The position will be responsible for monitoring the adherence to policies and procedures with focus on ensuring that production and quality assurance goals are achieved and maintained in assigned departments. The Director of Coding plans, organizes and directs the organizational elements necessary to ensure the achievement of corporate goals and standards.

Essentials Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversees Coding operational metrics to include but not limited to departmental cost per patient, QA standards and productivity
  • Oversee monthly production and quality assurance reports from assigned departments and assist departmental management with development of action plans for employees not achieving goals
  • Research carrier guidelines to ensure appropriate coding policies are current
  • Oversee quarterly incentive process
  • Continual evaluation of departmental processes to ensure most efficient and cost-effective processes are followed, while adhering to local, state, federal, and corporate compliance laws, rules regulations and guidelines while assuring compliance with HCFS policies
  • Reviews ETM and communicates feedback to all departments to aid in both the reduction and prevention of denials related to coding. Leads departmental meetings along with Coding Education Manager to ensure collaborative efforts in assigned departments to achieve HCFS goals
  • Reviews monthly denial report for coding related denials to aid in both the reduction and prevention of denials related to coding
  • Actively participates in Anesthesia CAC meetings by identifying policies needing revisions or clarification
  • Oversee coding compliance audits, work with compliance to provide feedback related to audit findings
  • Oversee hiring, training and adherence to staffing ratios as defined by HCFS for each applicable department. Complete performance evaluations for direct reports, providing mentoring and guidance to Managers/Supervisors
  • Oversees in maintaining discipline, morale and harmonious personnel relations in assigned departments
  • Contributes to fiscal and budget planning process
  • Contributes positive leadership; reinforces departmental and organizational objectives
Other Responsibilities
  • Monitor ETM and work closely with Director and Managers of AR to ensure that we have appropriate appeal letters in place and coding policies to minimize coding related issues
  • Work closely with HCFS and Anesthesia Medical Directors to ensure accurate coding
  • Plan CE meetings for Coding Department working either internal or external resources
  • Utilize TES edits to prevent denials and/or charge correction as thoroughly as possible

Job Requirements:

Qualifications / Experience
  • RHIT or CPC or equivalent required
  • Proficient knowledge of ICD9 and CPT4 coding, as well as reimbursement policies and procedures
  • Ten (10) years of medical billing and coding
  • Minimum five (5) years previous experience at management level or above in leadership within physician coding and billing
  • Multi-site, multi-specialty and multi-state coding experience preferred
  • Excellent administrative and management skills
  • Independent judgment; effective, team-oriented leadership
  • Ability to delegate, motivate, control, monitor, and resolve issues in a performance driven, complex setting
  • Excellent computer skills with strong proficiency in spreadsheet applications and experience with Microsoft Office, experience with GE Centricity preferred
  • Excellent communications skills (verbal and written)
  • Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to change
  • Ability to manage stress and conflict
  • Previous experience with IDX preferred
  • Ability to deal with a variety of tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment and establish and orchestrate priorities while maintaining professional composure

Travel
  • Occasional travel to continuing education conferences and to assist in TeamHealth training and program development
