Medical Assistant - IU Health Orthopedics & Sports Medicine
Job Description Overview
This Medical Assisant position supports providers by assisting with patient assessments, procedures, and ongoing care. Responsibilities include managing patient flow and communication, obtaining vital signs and patient histories, reviewing laboratory results, documenting care, and providing patient education. The position requires strict adherence to confidentiality, clinic standards, and collaborative practices to ensure efficient, high‑quality patient care.

Working Conditions
Schedule: 32–40 hours per week, Monday–Friday (no weekends)
Availability for Zoom and other meetings (virtual and/or in‑person)
Prolonged sitting and extended work at a computer, including keyboard and screen use
Frequent use of office equipment, telephone, and clinic technology
Manual dexterity and ability to perform repetitive motions to meet productivity standards
Physical and mental stamina to work additional hours as required
Required Skills & Competencies
Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Strong critical thinking and sound judgment skills
Ability to evaluate data and draw accurate conclusions
Clear, professional verbal and written communication skills
Familiarity with surgical practices and clinic regulations
Knowledge of hazardous materials commonly used in a clinical setting
Understanding of effective body mechanics to prevent injury
Adaptability and ability to quickly learn new processes and procedures
Duties & Responsibilities
Assist providers with patient care, assessments, and clinical procedures
Support patients with musculoskeletal injuries and related conditions
Facilitate efficient patient flow throughout the clinic
Serve as a liaison between providers and patients, including phone communications and follow‑up on test results, surgical scheduling, and procedures
Provide patient education regarding conditions and treatment plans
Collaborate with providers and care teams to support patient well‑being
Obtain vital signs, nursing histories, and perform physical assessments
Review laboratory results and route information appropriately
Accurately document patient care, procedures, and assessments in medical records
Obtain pre‑certifications as required
Prioritize patient care assignments based on severity, scope of practice, and individual strengths
Maintain clean, organized exam rooms and work areas in accordance with infection control policies
Participate in quality assessment and performance improvement initiatives
Maintain sample medication inventory and documentation, if applicable
Promote teamwork and positive working relationships across the clinic
Uphold strict patient confidentiality at all times
Perform additional duties as assigned by Providers or the Operations Team
